Lumen·TV

In order, and without dates.

A quarter written next to a feature on a project that has never run on a television is a way of being wrong in public. This is the order instead, and the thing at the top is the thing everything else waits for.

Blocking everything

Run it on a real television

The whole project has been validated in a browser and in LG’s own simulator. Every performance figure is an extrapolation, and three capabilities cannot be finished without a panel in the room.

  • Install the package on an LG set and measure a cold start
  • Find out which of the three playback engines opens which container
  • Answer whether a recording can fire with the application suspended
  • Read the interface from three metres and fix whatever cannot be read
  • Confirm the set keeps a configured playlist after being switched off
Built

The player, and the licence around it

Everything on the features page marked Built. It works in a browser and it is tested there — 2 068 tests across five suites, run on every change.

  • Three playlist formats, a guide, and a search that keeps up across 100 000 channels
  • Timeshift, multi-view, picture-in-picture, audio and subtitle tracks
  • Profiles, favourites, groups, hiding, reordering, parental locks
  • A licence that belongs to a person, with seats that move between sets
  • Paying from a phone, and adding a playlist from a phone
Next

Finishing what is half-done

No dates. These are ordered, and each is finished before the next is started.

  • Recording that writes to a drive, once a television has answered whether it can
  • Descriptions inside the guide timeline, and a guide time offset
  • Several guide sources merged into one, de-duplicated by tvg-id
  • A playlist that refreshes on a schedule rather than when asked
  • Renaming a channel, and giving one your own logo
Considering

Things we are unsure about

Genuinely undecided. What people ask for is the only thing that moves this order, so asking works.

  • Exposing the decoder choice, once there are measurements to give it an honest default
  • A custom user agent per channel rather than per playlist
  • Guide reminders
  • More than eight playlists at once
Not doing

Deliberately excluded

Said here so that nobody waits for them.

  • Catch-up and replay — it depends on archive endpoints many providers do not expose
  • Handing a stream to another application — webOS has no mechanism for it
  • Any advertising, sponsored channel or referral link, in any licence
  • Anything that would require knowing what you watch

Nothing here is a commitment with a date attached, and nothing you buy today is priced on it. What you are paying for is what is built today, and every v1 update is included as it ships.
